Bf 109E-1 in 1/48 – Emil In Details
Posted by Vladimír Šulc|on January 25 2012, 12:37 PM|in Blog, Eduard Products|in 1/48, 48th scale, Bf 109E-1, bf109, Bf109E-1, Emil, Emil 1/48In the previous article about our upcoming Bf 109E-1 in 1/48, I’ve introduced the first ever build Emil. During past weekend, I was able to start building a second Bf 109E-1 to bring you this next article, where we go more into details about specific parts of this fantastic kit.
Fuselage – Tail Section
The rudder is separately molded in the kit. Quite sharp trailing edge of the stabilizer covers the leading edge of the rudder, with well fixed distance between the parts. The final tail arrangement looks pretty realistic. Note the screw for settings of the horizontal stabilizer angle inside the vertical stabilizer under the leading edge of the horizontal tail…well, this sounds like a Google navigation, but this assembly is not so large area to find this squirt! It is about 2mm high pin with thread. The tail wheel is separately molded from the leg.

Fuselage – Nose
The engine assembly fits to the nose exactly, the position is fixed by the exhaust tubes, which are fixed in the bottom cowling. It is necessary to load the engine into the nose a little bit from front to back. See the glued side panel behind the engine, the line between this one and the rest of the fuselage looks like the other panel lines, although is is simply the interspace between two parts. Note the hollow exhaust pipes.

Wing
The fabric areas were always Eduard´s glory, these winglets and flaps are all inclusive service with the stitching and netting. The metal areas became be pretty well looking in our fashion too. Note the wheel well, it is much better to glue the well on the top half of the wing, not to the bottom how the instructions shows. The upper half wing relief leads the well part to the position purely exact.

Cockpit
Eduard´s classics. Well detailed space, with color photoetch seatbelts, dashboard and some other gadgets.

Engine
Very complex, well detailed assembly. The oil tank assembly on the front bottom was simplified, which should eliminate a lot of stress during the engine build (remember our 32nd…) Note the hollow exhaust pipes and machine guns. This is what is announced as slide molds by our competitors – see guys, also we can do it!

Engine Cowling
It fits over the engine if no details are installed, and when you sand the front upper corners of the engine block. Unfortunately, the kit allows the build in two modes only – open or closed. The machine gun barrels are hollow again. All the barrels in this kit are hollow.

Nose Radiator
We decided to re-design this part of the kit in comparizont to our 32nd. Fits perfectly, to keep the exact position of the radiator in the fuselage is important as usual.
Propeler
The propeller is molded in one piece, except two piece cone, with nice detailed pitch mechanism.

Wheels
There is nothing to add. We can´t do it better…at least now!

Měl jsem to štěstí s něklolika dalšíma vidět Emila na sobotní soutěži v Mariánkách u Karla Č. Na první pohled nádherná práce , to se vám povedlo. Už aby tu byla E-3 a E-4/7 .
I would like to see a special class of competition of models built IN THE RAW. By this I mean no paint, only the plastic colours and decals AS PROVIDED IN THE KIT. NO aftermarket. Just PLAIN BUILDING SKILLS. Where? in the elimination of the GLUE LINES! Nowheres as easy as some imagine. This kit would be ideal to try it out. Doubt it’ll take off, but why not as a special?? I think I need to get this kit: my fav’s the FW-190/Ta-152 family, but this Emil is sure to please me as I want one that is really very good. This has show stopper written all over it.
Hi Vlad,
You guys have learned well.
Every photo I have seen of this kit has further reinforced my initial positive impression, and these detail closeups only hammer home how much of an improvement this kit is over the 1/32 offering. For instance, the wheels are utterly awesome, there’s no other way to describe it; the seat shape has been corrected; the engine details look fantastic in this scale; and some have voiced gripes about the stitched rib tape effect on the fabric surfaces, but I personally think it looks fantastic. The riveting effect is also just about perfect for the scale- not too heavy, not too light.
This is a tremendous effort, one where you guys clearly spent a lot of time checking and re-checking references, and it shows. I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these!
Well done!
Lynn Ritger
I think you’ve just established a new standard for the Emil in any scale. The work looks excellent. Like Lynn, I can’t wait to get a shot at building one these beauties. You guys go from strength to strength.
Great job and keep up the great work. Now what about the Gustav series?
I really do look forward to see this kit on the market. Is it me or the form/shape of the seat is little bit “awkward”? Or is it just limitation of the technology?
Every time I see more photos posted of this new kit I become very excited about the its future release. I would also like to expand on what Floyd said about a new standard for Bf-109E models and say that this kit is a few steps up the ladder in detail. I’ve mentioned before that the wheels has set a new plateau and now I’d like to add that the cockpit parts has done the same.
Keep up the great work guys!
PS–Could you do a Friedrich too and also in 1/32 scale along with some Gustavs?
Velmi hezké, asi nejlepší Mezek v 1/48. A gumy Metzeler, ty se dodnes montují na BMW endura:-).
I am not a Bf 109 fanatic (or major enthusiast, for that matter) but I have built the Tamiya 1:48 E-3, the Hasegawa G-6 in 1:32 and your big E-1. I thought I was done, but the quality of engineering, moulding and detail of this one ensures I will have at least one. In my opinion Eduard is the two most progressive, risk-taking, innovative scale model company in the field. You continue to improve, innovate and offer outstanding value. Your only equal is Wingnut Wings. I am very pleased to have and build your products. Keep up the outstanding work!
Wow! This sets a new standard. I love your kits. I thought I was out of the 1/48th Bf-109E business after the Tamiya kit. I guess I was wrong. Simply beautiful in all respects. This is the work of craftsmen.
Super, ještě by to chtělo vydat bf 110 a fw 190 celé řady v měřítku 1:32 a budu šťasten jako blecha
))))
Hi
This is regarding the Spinners, will we get both Spinners with a Hole in it and a Capped Spinner ?
On several other Crash Reports of Me 109 E-1 / E-3 during 1940, it stated that there was a hole at the Tip of the Spinner ( If we were to read several Crash Reports involving Me 109 at http://www.aircrewremembrancesociety.com/luft1939/ )
Also further referring to the Messerschmitt Bf 109E Spinners Post at http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=12299
So My question is that will we get both options of a Capped Spinner and one with out in this scale model 1/48 Me109 E1 ?
Was it to do with Armament Issue or it was just an optional configuration with Me 109 E-1/B ‘s ?

Yes, both versions are available.
I think that there are not a handhold and a foothold on the right-side of 109E.
True
Right side will be correct on the other subtypes.
