Discussion With Spitfire Lead Designer Ladislav Jonas

Our new Spitfire Mk.IXc late version in 48th scale is going to be released in ten days from now and today I’m here with a short report from the discussion I had with the Lead Designer of this new scale kit – Ladislav Jonas.

Several days ago, I had a really nice talk with Ladislav about our new Spitfire and the research behind this new kit. Particularly, I was interested in his own opinions and experiences he had during the research and design process.

Below you can find my questions and Ladislav’s answers on this topic. Enjoy!

Firstly, I would really like to know how much time did this project (Spitfire Mk.IXc late version) actually took?

Ladislav: That’s quite hard to say, because during the research phase, we’ve also examined other versions – to prepare ourselves for the upcoming projects right after this one. Generally speaking, it took 2 years of intense work to research, design and create first molding forms.

That seems like a lot of work! Have you had any construction issues with some particular parts of the aircraft? I mean, was there anything really hard that you couldn’t get over in terms of the design process?

Ladislav: Nothing in particular. This project was a great experience which lead to some enhancements of our current construction processes and also allowed us to test the limits of the new milling machine in terms of details. To say the least, it was a great deal of work and fun!

Ladislav says there's nothing special about our new Spitfire. Just another Eduard-style scale kit. Do you think he's right?

The new Spitfire looks just fantastic when speaking of details. That must have taken tremendous amount of time and design process improvements compared to Eduard’s previous kits, hadn’t it?

Ladislav: I have a different opinion on this. The basis of our design/construction process has not changed very much. I believe the main cause of the quality of the new Spitfire is mostly in manufacturing improvements. In my opinion, these are the main reasons why our new Spitfire looks how it looks.

(Editor’s note: I believe [and you have to admit] that without good construction philosophy, deep research, precise detailing and the brains behind all this, it would never be possible to manufacture this kit, just by using better technology…[even if we had 10 of those milling machines] My opinion is that technology is here to make good thoughts/projects even better. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!)

So, was there anything special about this project for you? What is the one thing you’ll remember the Spitfire for?

Ladislav: I believe it’s the research process itself, because that one week long research trip to Canada was very exhausting for me. I was able to sleep only for four hours the day before we left to Canada. I had a serious jet lag during the first day of our arrival. Then, I couldn’t sleep on the hotel room due to a very loud air-conditioning (which couldn’t be turned off). The next day I even tried some sedatives to help me fall asleep – they didn’t work. So from this 8 day trip, I was only able to sleep the last few days during our stay in Ottawa. So this is my strongest memory related to this project.

Great experience, lot of fun, and several days without sleep - that's what's Spitfire project to Ladislav.

I think this is something many will be interested in: Since you were there from the beginning of this project, have you fell in love with the new Spitfire or do you hate it already?

Ladislav: To be honest, I don’t have any special feelings for this project. As said, it was great experience and fun to work on Spitfire, but I personally find (for example) the MiG-21 much more interesting/thrilling project.

As you can see, Ladislav thinks there’s nothing to boast about when speaking of the Spitfire project. He’s certainly not the type of person that hypes-up stuff and thinks this is just another normal Eduard project.

yes, we will release special Czechoslovak AF boxing in August. It will cover the Spitfire Mk.IX in service in CZ AF during WWII and post war, and also the service of the ex cz Spits in Izrael and Burma.

Eduard On Spitfire Research Trip In Canada

During summer 2009, several Eduard peeps visited museums in Canada, in order to further research some questionable areas of Spitfire Mk.IX aircraft (and other versions too).

They visited Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Canada Aviation And Space Museum in Ottawa, and other private museums.

I’m bringing you few photos from this “trip” – mainly from inside of the museums, where Vladimir Sulc, Stanislav Archman and Ladislav Jonas carefully inspected several Spitfire machines.

Without further due, here are the photos. Enjoy!

Some sources claim, there are supposed to be no visible rivets on Spitfire surface. Verify this fact on this photo.

Another proof that rivets are visible even on putted/grinded Spitfires.

Yes, all Spitfires have smooth surface like this one, but the rivets are still visible!

Maybe you’re asking yourself, why are we showing you Spitfire wing details again, even though we had showed them already in post „-36“.

It’s because we would like to show you two changes that were recently made on the molding tool, to perfectly imitate Spitfire’s Mk.IXc late version.

First modification focuses on landing gear bay opening, while second one adds the base for IFF antennae under the right side of the wing – we’re trying to make the best representation of this machine in every detail!
